Case Study: Kimberley Pellosis

Kimberly grew up interested in science and, with family members working in the medical field, she always assumed she would study science or medicine when she went to university.

However, going to a government school with limited funding and coming from a family from a lower socio-economic background, Kimberly was not exposed to opportunities that might broaden her horizons or offer other options for study. Wanting to find opportunities that she might not be aware of Kimberly took to googling for herself and came across the Earthwatch Student Challenge. Her application was successful and in December 2010 she attended the Melbourne's Microbats expedition where she developed an appreciation of what scientific field research is all about conducted. The program inspired her interest in environmental science and this planted the seed of the idea of a career in the environmental arena.

Having completed her Bachelor of Science at The University of Melbourne, majoring in environmental science, she is now studying for her Masters in Agriculture.

Kimberly has been an active volunteer since her teenage years and this continues to this day.Inspired by her time on Student Challenge she has maintained her interest in the area of science and currently mentors for various high school science programs and is involved in running 3 day science camps to share her passion with younger students.
